  • Nose
Beguiling sweetness – caramel and gummy bears – caresses the nose. In addition aromatic, warm smoke! Something so intense! Some of the smoke disappears completely, then comes back. Apple is here now, grilled neatly in bacon. Still extremely cute. The alcohol is already there, but tame for 57%. A young smoker can be so complex and great! I’m excited. Malt is now coming through and a little cowshed, I am reminded of alpine pastures in the Alps. Pear is added.
  • Taste
Here too – cute. The smoke gets through faster and stronger. A creamy, sweet, greasy mouthfeel. It gets drier over time. The second sip has less smoke, but brings herbs that wonderfully complement the sweetness.
  • Finish
Long and warm, sweet with aromatic smoky aromas.

The sticky toffee pudding is both in the nose and palate and it works well with the peat.

What I love about Octomores’ is the complexity of flavours underneath the peat. Yes the peat is a strong characteristic but there is almost like an art and craftsmanship with the barrels used, and the aging process so that when the nose and palate adjusts you can pick out the nuances layer upon layer. Although I enjoy this bottle, i’m not sure this independent bottling has the same characteristics, the peat as ever is strong, and there are flavours underneath it all, but those flavours are much more subtle and as a result the peat is a more dominant factor in flavour, great if you are a peathead and that’s what you are looking for. For me, though I do love that Octomore peat, its the digging deep for all the surprising flavours that makes it a miss at this price point. Lets face it Octomore is never cheap, it needs to be special, this is good, is it special – depends what you are looking for. The first rating I read here was a 5, I will give it a 3, which should make it an even 4/5….
